Based on the idea that interaction between people leads to the creation of new forms of culture, the roving cultural movement Tokyo Caravan kicked off in Tokyo’s Komazawa Olympic Park in 2015. The project has journeyed to Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Tohoku, Kyoto, Kumamoto, Toyota, Kochi, Akita, Iwaki, Saitama, Toyama, Okayama and Hokkaido, learning about the history and the culture that people in these places have come to treasure and incorporating this learning into creation, collaborating with leading figures of local traditional performing arts and culture to generate new forms of expression found in Tokyo Caravan alone. A diverse array of expressive artists from every genre including traditional performing arts, musicians, and contemporary artists who would ordinarily never come into contact with each other have continued on a journey producing unique performances, taking on creative challenges that go beyond their respective expressive forms, and realizing a “mingling of cultures.” On Saturday August 21 and Sunday August 22, 2021, Komazawa Oympic Park in Setagaya-ku - where Tokyo Caravan’s journey began - will provide the project’s 17th setting for the event, “Tokyo Caravan in Komazawa 2021.”
Gathering again this summer in Komazawa are people Tokyo Caravan encountered as it traveled all over the country: Expressive artists at the forefront of traditional culture in various parts of Japan, and flamboyant artists receptive to the Tokyo Caravan concept who gave their creative input to the project.
The seeds of new forms of expression that sprouted during the movement after contact with Tokyo Caravan are now set to become one on this ground, flowering in a performance of unprecedented size.
